We’ve had some feedback recently from customers who just cannot believe that our drying racks can hold as much as they can. Comments that range from “there is no way that 3-Tier can hold a pair of wet jeans” to questions about the strength of the Expanding Indoor Clothesline’s (EIC) ability to stand up to a load of wash, including sweaters. We are hear to finally set the record straight and let you know a few important things about Hills’ Drying Racks and why they stand out from the competition:

They are one-piece construction – there are no joints to fail.

They are meant for indoor drying, but of course can be used outside in good weather…this is not to say that a decent wind would not take them for a ride and blow them over. Regular outdoor drying can be accomplished with one of the four other types of clotheslines we offer (Rotary, Folding Frame, Retractable, Portable).

They can definitely stand up to weight…our family of six, including a 6′5″ male and all of his XL size clothes, has the ability to hang wash confidently on these racks. We’ve hung everything from wet jeans, to sweaters, to a load of bath towels, including a small rug on one of the wings of the EIC.

We’ve had many people come to us excited to see the EIC because they have used the same type of rack in Europe and didn’t think they could get something like it here. We recently had a customer who ordered the Hills EIC contact us to say that these racks are similar, but the Hills is a superior product. It is built much sturdier and the wires for hanging are steel wire, not plastic lines like the other across the Atlantic. There are products available that look similar to the Hills product, but they can’t match it. The quality and durability is in line with everything else Hills does in the manufacture of their items. We are proud to carry them and bring them to the US for you.

The image below is of a load of wash on our EIC, with Gary’s wet jeans hanging on one wing. Not a problem. The room with our wood stove is perfect for drying the laundry during cold months…clothes dry quickly and much needed moisture is added to the air in the house. Living in the Northeast makes line drying an inside job most days during the winter months.

Hanging out by the woodburner.

We invite you to put the products to the test. They are not your typical drying rack available in big box stores. They are not made so that they will break in a year or two and you’d have to buy a new one…they are made so that you can rely on them for years of drying. And we are here to help with your decision or if anything comes up after your purchase.

Be sure to sign up at www.breezedryer.com for our newsletter, which will be the place to find out about any savings we may be offering. And don’t forget to “friend” us on Facebook, and let us know what you love about your Hills product! Thanks for reading!

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to mention nonetheless. I’m sure most of our readers are aware of the fact that balance plays an important role in wash hanging. If you string a single line across your yard, you wouldn’t necessarily hang the heaviest items in the middle, where the sag would overwhelm the line, although the good old clothes “prop” poles do the trick. The same “balancing act” goes for any clothesline that you may use.

There are unique features to the Hills Clotheslines that others just don’t offer. We at Breeze Dryer are proud to claim them. One good example is the spinning of the rotary in the breeze; it is not only lovely and calming to watch (can you tell how much I enjoy this?), but helps the clothes dry quicker. This is something that any of the Hills Rotaries will do, once they are raised above the “wind brake”, that scalloped piece that the head of the unit fits into when it is cranked all the way down. One thing that makes this function work most efficiently (the spinning) is to hang the wash relatively evenly. In other words, if you have a heavy blanket hanging on one side, balance the opposite side with similarly heavy laundry. There have been times when we’ve dried our wet, down-filled, queen-size comforter on one side of the rotary, and that was all that was drying that day, nothing to balance it with…things went just fine. This is do-able. But if you do have other wash to do, it’s a good idea to get the most of the rotation, to balance things out.

The Extenda Retractable Lines are a little more flexible when it comes to hanging items…by this I mean a very heavy item may be strung across/over more than 1 line allowing better air circulation underneath and faster drying. These may be placed anywhere along the lines. Once the bar is locked in the bracket (included) on the opposite wall (or post), the tension may be set and the lines are ready to go. Our neighbors, who use their dryer regularly, realize that not everything can go into it… They came to the right place when they needed to dry their drapes, requiring not only space, but strength. No clothesline “prop” poles necessary!

The Drying Racks from Hills in a way work the same, not in the spinning function, but the need for balance. The racks are designed for indoor use, but absolutely may be used outside, on a deck or patio or balcony, when the weather is good (not recommended to leave outside all of the time). These racks are extremely well made, but that is not to say that a strong breeze coming through would not take that rack for a ride…and possibly tip it over. It only makes sense that an unbalanced load on a rack would make it more prone to tipping, so please keep that in mind. In the meantime, happy line-drying!

With Halloween right around the corner, it seems like an appropriate time to mention scary things…as adults we’re scared of different things than the typical vampire or werewolf. Visiting the Mother Earth News fair recently, I stopped by their bookstore. This was not scary. It was my first time at the show, though Gary had visited last year and raved about it. I was equally impressed, and the bookstore was incredible. Being the mother of four that I am I decided to check out some of the children’s books, and came upon a title called Catch the Wind Harness the Sun by Michael J. Caduto. This was a book of cool science projects for kids, and I was looking through it as I turned to page 100…the activity was DRYING CLOTHES ON-LINE. Amazing that kids have to think of this as a science project, but I was intrigued by the idea of getting children interested in this way, even if their parents don’t regularly line dry. Not scary yet, right? Sort of sad that something so simple is not more commonly practiced, but not really scary.

Now for the scary part. Reading further into the “project”, Mr. Caduto gives children the numbers to assist in the calculation of how much energy a family could save by drying clothes on a line. Encouraging children to think about what this all really means, Mr. Caduto states that “every year it takes 29 coal-fired power plants to power just the clothes dryers in the United States.”!!! (The exclamation points are mine.) “An average coal plant in the United States emits more than 3.5 million tons (3.2 million metric tons) of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.” If those last few sentences don’t SCARE you, they should. They haunted me, literally, since I ready them a month ago.

Clotheslines may be low-tech, they don’t need to be plugged in, but their use makes sense and it is an easy way to save money, energy, and obviously carbon emissions. Hills makes either an outdoor line (Rotary Clothesline, Folding Frame, Extenda, Portable) or indoor line (Folding Frame, Extenda, Portable, Drying Racks) depending on where you live or what your home type is…apartment, condo, home with large or small backyard. Do we really want to help power 29 power plants across the US?? To me, that is a scary thought. I’ll do what I can to make a difference…for my children, for the planet, because this is something I can do easily.

There have been a lot of changes showing up on our website, www.breezedryer.com, lately. Things look a bit different when you click on the Rotary Clotheslines link on the left side of the page… there are so many new products with different names! It is not as confusing as it may first appear. Hills has been working, as always, to make things easier for the customer. Now the rotaries have more intuitive names, like the Rotary 6, Rotary 7 and Rotary 8, each telling you how many lines per side that particular rotary has. The Rotary 6 now replaces the Rotary 400 (with 6 lines/side), the Rotary 7 replaces the Rotary 450 and the Rotary 8 replaces the Rotary 500.

Rest assured that any parts you may need for your Hills clothesline will still be available to you, whether you have a 10 year old clothesline or a 3 year old clothesline. You may not have noticed the pictures on the website of the rigors these products go through before they are sold. The clotheslines are tested in numerous ways to ensure they stand up to Hills quality standards.

We are excited to offer a line drying solution to another area of your home – the pool!

Goodbye wet towels hanging on the chairs, fences, piled on the ground or draped over the picnic table . . . your pool area will look great and your towels will dry more effectively. Our Hills® Supa Fold 120 Folding Frame Clothesline (#FD45408) offers the perfect solution. When not in use the Supa Fold 120 folds down flat to the wall so it won’t get in the way when not in use. The width can be customized to accommodate whatever space limitation you have. Also works great for vacation homes at the lake or beach. Attach one in the garage or basement so wet towels won’t be left hanging all over your house.

Don’t have a wall to attach a Supa Fold 120 folding frame ? No problem, our optional Supa Fold Adjustable Post Kit (#FD45420) mounts in the ground so you can install the Supa Fold120 in the location that best suits your needs. It is also adjustable to the height that is convenient to you. The optional Supa Fold Ground Mount Socket Pack (#FD45430) allows the Supafold 120 to be removed from the ground and stored when not in use. That is what we love about our Hills® Clotheslines . . . they do not have to be permanently installed in your yard leaving you the flexibility to regain your yard space

Just came in from having the most beautiful warm breeze blow through my hair. And I don’t mean standing in front of the bathroom mirror with my hairdryer. I mean the kind that reminds you that winter doesn’t last forever and March may come in like a lion, but truly does go out like a lamb. The kind of breeze that makes the amazingly warm (74deg) day here in Bucks County perfect for drying laundry, lots and lots of laundry.

I probably have written before about our love of our rotary. It’s a big one, the Hills Rotary 500, with plenty of room for the wash of our family of 6. I am on my fourth washload of the day, and was standing there watching the clothes blow and I started to think…think about how hectic things can be, just life in general. I have so many things I should be doing right now, that will be waiting for me when I go in. Though things are hectic, sometimes it is a wonderful thing to take a break for a minute or two. As I stood there I thought about how simple it is to hang the wash, using only my own energy, and letting the sun and wind take over and do the job of drying the clothes. No dryer to turn on and worry about shrinkage or what my electric bill might look like…or wonder when I’m going to get the clothes out of the dryer and actually fold them. Just nature, and me, collaborating.

When I’m out there, I get the chance to stop and look at the clothes, my children’s, how small they are, and remember how much smaller they used to be. There is going to come a time when the clothes will all be big and that will be sooner than I’d like to admit. But for now I can stand and look at the little socks and undershirts, dress shirts and pants and just be grateful. Grateful for all of it.

Is it possible to have an AHA! moment standing at your clothesline? I guess for me it is. It lets me slow down for a short while, take a breather and think about life, and goodness, and leaves me feeling grateful. That’s why I love it.

The weather here in the Northeast has been a bit unpredictable this winter, and what a winter it has been…we’re not even halfway through! If you live where the seasons change, you’re interested in line-drying and want to do it throughout the year, Hills makes a clothesline for you.

For us and our family, the rotary is our outdoor clothesline of choice. We love to watch the clothes spin in the breeze, it’s so relaxing. We can get so many loads hung and drying at once that it’s a big time-saver. But that scenario is still months away, so the clothes have their place drying inside. Indoors, we use a Portable 170 and drying racks spread around the house to lend much-needed moisture and dry not only laundry but all of those pants, gloves and hats that the kids get covered with snow.

Even if you are a die-hard dryer user, there are probably a few items that you just can’t or won’t put in the dryer…delicates or other special fabric…so where best to hang them? The Expanding Indoor Clothesline and the 3-Tier Mobile Airer are two options that are quick to set up and take down. These can be used anywhere in a home, an apartment, at a beach house, etc, where temporary space is needed to dry.

3-Tier fully loaded!

We have had customers ask “Is the 3-Tier strong enough to hold a sweatshirt? It can’t be.” For those familiar with drying products sold at big-box retailers, Hills quality is not something they are used to (more on the quality testing of Hills Clotheslines in future blog postings). This past summer, we filled up the top rack of the 3-Tier with wet beach towels and suits. Not a problem.

We use the EIC (Expanding Indoor Clothesline) to dry our heavy sweaters plus other clothes. With pegs or not, the possibilities are endless.

So, until the sun shines warmly again here in PA, we wish you happy line-drying inside, for now.
