Eco Facts

Contrary to what you may have heard, it is easy to be "green".  The simple act of line drying can reap "green" rewards, both personally and globally.

Read on to find out how you can make a difference.

Is line drying worth the effort?

Be good to your clothes and the earth at the same time.   Static electricity and shrinkage are not issues when clothes are hung on a line vs. using a dryer.  Clothing hung on a line lasts longer and smells fresher.  And all that fuzz that collects in the dryer's lint basket is actually your clothing breaking down thread by thread. By line drying half of their washloads, an average family can save 720 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year.  So take a break from the speed of life; slow down and try hanging clothes.

How much energy does my dryer actually use?

According to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, as of 2005 there were 88 million dryers in the United States.  Each of these consume approximately 1,079 kilowatt hours of energy per household, emitting 2,224 pounds of carbon dioxide.  Every individual who chooses to do one less dryer load makes a difference.

Hanging wash is good for you inside and out . . .
Hanging wash is a simple, easy and efficient way to save energy and money.  On a personal level, hanging outside gets you some fresh air, some exercise, and some sun which we all need a little of every day.  And during winter months, indoor wash hanging can serve as a natural humidifier for the cold, dry winter air.
